The clear piece of plastic slides between your case and the phone itself. The metal enforced grommet adds stability and function. I personally use an Otterbox cell case and the grommet just slides into the hold where the battery will charge. When it’s not attached to the lanyard I can still close the waterproof cover over the usb port hole. You hardly notice it’s there when you don’t need it but when you do need it it’s as if you have a 3rd arm!
